Would You Help Me If I was Pregnant?
“Hey Ms. Sedgwick can I talk to you?” “Sure what is going on, trouble in class?” “no”, “You need working papers?” “No” “Then what seems to be the problem?” “Well…………………… I’m pregnant…………”
Constitution High School, Central High School, West Philly High School, and Frankford High School these high schools have plenty differences but the one thing that they do have in common is teenage pregnancy.
A lot of schools have especially high schools have teenage girls who are pregnant or who have kids already. Some of these girls go through a lot of judgmental remarks that people make and the last thing they need are judgmental teachers and helping staff so what would a teenage girl have to go through if she was pregnant?
High schools have procedures that a student must do if they are to become pregnant. The helping staff at Constitution High School takes many steps to make sure they fit the needs of the expecting mother. When Ms.Segwick the counselor at the school was put through an experiment to see what a student would have to do if they became with child. A student went to the counselor pretending to be pregnant so she could find out the facts hands on. When the students friends who told Ms. Sedgwick that she was pregnant she got the friends to get the student so she could talk to her. When the student went to her office she pretended to be sad and upset at the fact she was pregnant and her mom was going to kill her if she found out. Ms. Sedgwick handled the situation calmly she asked the student questions such as “Are you okay?” and “How are you feeling?”. After they meet and talked Ms. Sedgwick told her to check back in and if she didn’t that she was going to find her and call her down to talk. She gave the student a few days and when she did not hear back from her she called the student down and the first thing Ms. Sedgwick said was “So how is everything are you ok I didn’t hear from you?”. Let you be reminded that Ms. Sedgwick is the counselor of Constitution High School she deals with plenty in just one day and the fact that she remembered to call a student down to her office to talk to her. When Ms.Segwick was told that the student wasn’t really pregnant and that it was just for research she laughed about it and said “well did I pass?” and she was ensured that yes she did passed with a laugh.
Students have plenty obstacles to overcome. They have to miss school and they tend to miss plenty of work and they have to catch up on all the work they miss. The last thing they need is people at their school judging them or looking at them differently and not wanting to help them. If a student doesn’t get help from the teachers then they will fail and get left back and be a 30 year old in high school still. They will barely have a personal life because they might lose friends or their friends could come closer to them but they would be doing so much for the baby they wouldn’t have a lot of time to go to parties and hang out with friends because they have a big responsibility. Students were asked is taking care of a baby expensive? And they responded yes it takes up most of your money because you have to buy pampers clothes and all the necessities that a baby needs to survive.
Situations like the one the student put herself in can go a lot of ways the counselor could have just said ok I don’t care about you being pregnant or it could go the way it went for the student and she come and make sure that she was ok and ask her what was she going to do and does she know her options. When a school can do everything in their power to make sure that that student knows if nobody is their then they can be their support group. Pregnancy is hard itself, but being a teen a being pregnant? That must be must be something that can’t be explained in words. Students have to worry about the school not caring. Taking care of a baby and trying to do catch up work so they won’t fail. The most important thing is that they might lose friends or they might get people that judge them and that don’t want to be their friend anymore. When “Blossom” was interviewed she said something important she said “Yeah I’m a teenager and I’m pregnant but so what its nothing I can do about it now and who are you to judge me when you don’t know what I have to go through”. That quote alone says all one needs to know.

Just Another "Summer" Day
Laying on the beach the sun beaming down me like a sunset. Sipping on a Bahama Mama and reading Cosmo Girl magazine. The ocean gives me a cool breeze to cool me off. Can everyone see it, Can everyone hear it that’s the summer of my life calling to me, I have been here for awhile now. How did I get here and I’m only 16 years old. My age got me here physically. I remember my 16th birthday party my family gathered together to see me transfer over to summer even though they didn’t know it I was becoming a woman in front of their eyes. Sixteen was the peak of my womanhood .when given a responsibility one has no choice but to move on to summer. First responsibility given to me was cleaning my room by myself I had to make my messy bed when I woke up, clean my wooden tiled floor, and clean the sweaty window during the summer. Maturity a powerful weapon that no one wants to challenge it may scare my mom because I’m maturing so fast but I slowed down when I got to summer. My first sign of maturity was when I could handle the first sex talk with my mother. Knowing it I had to go through a uncomfortable conversation with my mother, but I had to act my age and just talk about it.
Knowledge of my age helped me transfer over to the process of becoming a woman. Age helped me mature and gave me a different look on life. Makes one more social especially when one turns 16 they can’t act like a 5 year old in the 10th grade. Height is associated with getting taller and even when one hates it one gets older. Eugenia Collier the Arthur of Marigolds created Lizabeth she hated the fact she appeared older because she knew she had to grow up and mature. Lizabeth couldn’t be a little child anymore she couldn’t play with her brother and his friends anymore she had to act her age and not the age she wants to go back to.
With age comes maturity as one ages one has to become mature. I first realized I was mature when my mom showed me she trusted me enough to make my own decisions. One has to have trust from your parents so one can feel that they have matured. Parents have to show one that they know one will make the best decision. One knows they have matured when one grows up when they finally say I’m done being a little child playing in the sand box on a spring day, they want to feel 16 going to a party in the summer with ones friends. Jobs when one can get a job and keep it one has matured. One may show that they no longer need to ask their parents for money every week and let them once again say No go get a job K’la, one can go in their wallet and no longer grab dust balls they can grab the money they made at the job they got.
Given responsibilities makes one grow up. When given a responsibility it makes one feel like wow! Life has a lot of responsibilities. I remember when my mom said that I have to start washing my own clothes, clean my own room, and wash my own hair by myself I was only 10 and that’s when I realized that my life starts rite here when I can do the biggest tasks by myself. Responsibility makes life harder because during the day one has so much to do already and then one goes home and one has to wash the dishes, slave over a hot oven to put a meal on the table, and do homework and whatever else that one might have to take care of at home. Responsibility helped me grow up and see the world in a new way and transfer over to summer that wasn’t what finally made me mature but it made me realize I was ready to mature.
Summer brings so many things maturity, responsibility, and age. These things might come with summer, but these things helps one transfer over into summer. Responsibility makes one feel like a mature teen. Maturity makes one feel special. Age gives one power one may look older but they are still a kid at heart but one has approached their summer. On the beach relaxing with a tube top and tankani bottoms my dark complexioned skin glistens in the sun my tattoos appear fresh and new. I have a sex on the beach in my hand sipping little by little and a book by Zane this seems like the perfect day in summer doesn’t it? Well no one but me has to live it so it doesn’t matter as long as I’m having the time of my life

"High on the Hog" by Julia Fields essay
“Don’t judge me if you aint me”. That’s a saying people say when others have stereotyped them well “High on the Hog” by Julia Fields tells the story of a woman tired of people stereotyping her. When a poem has a great meaning like this one it makes one feel the emotion. Julia Fields uses numerous amounts of challenging vocabulary she uses foods from oyher countries with crazy names. Julia Fields uses great life lessons it makes me think about my life.
First the meaning of the poem shows that she wants to feel equal to the others. She wants what she deserves not what people give her. She receives leftovers she even quotes it in the poem “For eating the leavings from others tables”. Whom ever tells the story does not want people stereotyping her she wants one to get to know her and see her true character acts not what one might think she acts.
Next vocabulary challenges the reader the Arthur uses SAT words that make one think hard it makes you use a dictionary. Some of these words come from a different language. I like when she compares the different types of food like “ I want aperitifs supreme and baked Alaska.” She doesn’t want the taste of pig she doesn’t want Hoe-cake, grits, high-blood pressure chops and gravy sops anymore she has had enough of that.
Lastly the life lesson that the poem tells. “High on the Hog” explains what she wants in life. Ms.Fields gives people an understanding of what her life feels like. Due to great emotion coming out in the word choice in this statement “And not because these are the whites domain but because I’m entitled.” Which shows that she wants what the others get and she doesn’t want them because that’s what the white people have she wants it because she deserves it after all she has gone through.
In closing this poem teaches us the meaning of life. “High on the Hog” gives one more than one view on life it says just because I’m this I should get more than that. Continuesly through the poem the arthur uses challenging vocab I also found the names of the food challenging. Based on the meaning of the poem she wants more than what was given to her> Now ask yourself would you want someone to judge you if they haven’t lived your life?

NHD Reflection
Im so glad that NHD is over me and my partner did Ethel Hedgeman's Discovery of Alpha Kappa Alpha. We accomplished to get through alot we had to get our own materials because the school did not provide us with the correct colors that we needed to get the board done. Even though we had that major set back we managed to get a board done and it looked great we had everything we needed and that was thanks to us not the school.
I learned that this school is cheap and don't want to help a student out and buy some paper for a project that they make mandatory. The most important thing I learned about NHD is that an exhibit is easier than a documentary because last year me and my partners had to do alot of research and this year it was easier and it didn't take as long to put the project together.
I would change the middle of the boar because it is a little empty and I would make the arrangement so that the middle of the board looks like it has more information than it actually has. I would make the paper on the board look a little better than it does so it wont look wrinkled and so it wont have bubbles in it.
